Google's new Nest Cam and Doorbell can run on batteries
Google is refreshing its Nest lineup with three new products and a refresh for the wired indoor Nest Cam. Among the newcomers are Google's first battery-powered Nest Cam and Doorbell, as a recent leak indicated. You'll be able to install them just about anywhere around your home, and connect them to a wired power source, if you prefer. The battery life depends on how many recorded events the devices detect and factors like the temperature and settings. Google says the Doorbell's battery will run for up to six months on a single charge, while the Nest Cam can run for up to seven months before you need to juice it up.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Reduce Distracted Driving and Enhance Fleet Safety
Distraction behind the wheel, even for a split second, can mean serious injury or death. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) indicates that distraction or inattention is the second most common driver-related cause of fatalities for commercial truck operators. Data analyzed in 2019 from San Diego-based Lytx's client base showed that drivers who multi-task –such as eating, drinking, smoking and using a phone – increase their risk of an accident by 100%. The company's Vice President of Safety Services Del Lisk, who has been in the safety industry for 30 years, has witnessed how technology has become more sophisticated in preventing distracted driving incidents. Lisk spoke with Waste360 about machine-based learning, artificial intelligence and how data gathered through video telematics can aid companies with risk reduction.

The Event Horizon Telescope could capture video of the black hole
The world's first footage of a black hole in motion could soon be created by the scientists behind a groundbreaking image of the phenomenon released last week. Experts using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) say they will produce a video of hot gases whirling chaotically around the shadow or'accretion disk' of the black hole. The supermassive black hole sits at the centre of the galaxy Messier 87, roughly 54 million light-years from Earth. EHT is a'virtual' telescope that uses data from observatories around the world to turn the whole of the Earth into one giant detector. Researchers believe that, as more telescopes join the EHT project, they can produce more detailed images and eventually film the black hole.

Face Detection in Go using OpenCV and MachineBox
This is a text version of this video: packagemain #5: Face Detection in Go using OpenCV and MachineBox. I found a very nice developer-friendly project MachineBox, which provides some machine learning tools inside Docker Container, including face detection, natural language understanding and few more. And it has SDK in Go, so we will build a program which will detect my face. We will also use OpenCV to capture video from Web camera, it also has Go bindings. MachineBox can be installed very easily by running Docker container.
Amazon buys smart doorbell firm Ring for $1 billion
Amazon has bought home security startup Ring for £700 million ($1 billion) in a move that could help the internet giant's delivery arm reach into people's homes. Ring's doorbells capture video that can be streamed on your smartphone and other devices, and allow you to chat remotely to those standing at your door. The security devices could work well with Amazon Key, a smart lock and camera system that lets delivery personnel put packages inside a home to avoid theft or, in the case of fresh food, spoiling. Amazon has bought home security startup Ring for £700 million ($1 billion) in a move that could help the internet giant's delivery arm reach into people's homes. 'We're excited to work with this talented team and help them in their mission to keep homes safe and secure,' an Amazon spokesperson said.
Parley 'SnotBot' expedition brings machine learning and artificial intelligence to whale research - IT Peer Network
In more than five years with Intel Labs, I've had the good fortune to be involved with a team of extremely bright people focused on researching large-scale machine learning and data mining techniques. And now a great job is about to get even better, as I head out to sea this week with a team from Intel Labs and a collaborative team of ocean experts to put the same techniques to work to study the health and wellbeing of humpback whales. This expedition builds on our ongoing work with Parley for the Oceans, a group dedicated to advancing research and education focused on conserving whales and the oceans that sustain them. In early June, we highlighted some of the great work that Parley is doing in our blog on Parley'SnotBot' and Intel AI Technology. This week's Parley SnotBot expedition, parts of which will be captured live by National Geographic, will build on the work being done by the Mind's Eye Lab, a research initiative arising out of a collaboration between Intel Labs and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute.
